UK Parts

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Land Rover parts for my Defender still seem to be a problem.  I would love to just type into www.google.ie Land Rover Parts and a site come up that I can buy replacement parts in Ireland at a good price.

Since I needed to order a couple of parts I did trying speaking with a few garages in Ireland about Land Rover Parts, but all said the same thing ‘Order from the UK’, which proves my point again.  I really think there is an opportunity to sell Land Rover Parts online in Ireland.  What do you think?

DOE

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Great news my Land Rover Defender passed it’s DOE and is now on the road!!

My Land Rover 90 failed it’s DOE on Wednesday, but only for a couple of minor things, so overall was quite happy.  The two failers were the Windscreen Wipers were too slow and I probably need to replace the motor and the Heater Fan was not working, again probably need to replace the motor.  I didn’t realise the Land Rover could fail on the Heater Fan, but you must be able to demist the windscreen.  Makes sense really.  Anyhow I have 21 days to fix and get re-tested so should be on the road shortly!

Rear Brakes Locking Up!

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

I recently replaced all the braking system on my Land Rover 90, that right the whole braking system.  New Master Cylinder, New Front Discs, Calipers and Pads, New Rear Drums, Cylinders and Shoes.  However the result was not as I expected.  The brakes are better, but initially after replacing the braking system the rear brakes were locking badly.  I realised the braking system may of required re-bleeding and so I followed the proper bleeding sequence, rear left wheel, rear right wheel, front right wheel and finally front left wheel which assured me the system was propserly bled.  However, it still seemed as if there may of been a slight amount of air in the front system so I bled the front brakes again and this did make some improvement.  However, as the Land Rover 90 pick up is so light on the back end I still get the rear wheels locking up.

Goods Only Declaration

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Just about to tax my Land Rover Defender 90 and under the revised legislation I have to sign a declaration to say that I only use the vehicle as a goods carrying vehicle, that fine, but the declaration wording is that the the vehicle will NOT BE USED AT ANY TIME FOR SOCIAL, DOMESTIC or PLEASURE PURPOSE.  This then means that anyone with a commercial vehicle could not stop off at Tesco on the way home to pick up some shopping, or pick the kids up on the way home.  They would have to take the goods vehicle home first and then use a private care.  Is this reasonable?

Swivel Housing

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

A common land rover part which you need to keep an eye on is the Swivel Joint.  Often if the land rover is left standing for some time or corrosion damages the actual swival ball then you’re likely to get oil loss.  Not only would this not be good for the swivel joint itself, but also could cause damage to the CV (Constant Velocity) joint.  Recently I rebulit the complete swivel housing and while at it replaced the brake disc, wheel bearing and all seals.  The result is fantastic.  No more leaking oil and the steering is perfect.

However, yet again I could not contemplate buying the land rover parts in Ireland, just way too expensive and no one has stock.

Land Rover Parts – Clutch Pipe

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Recently needed to replace the clutch pipe that connects the master cylinder to the flexible hose that runs to the slave cylinder.  Thinking the best place for Land Rover parts would be a dealer I went to the main dealer in Waterford.  They quoted me €45.00 plus vat.  I then went to a company in the UK that offered me a genuine Land Rover part for £8.00 plus vat and postage.  Some difference.  OK the postage was £10.00, but even with exchange rates the part was less than half price.

Land Rover – The Off Road vehicle!

Monday, January 10th, 2011

If you own a Land Rover you no doubt have every confidence in the vehicles sterling capabilities both On and Off the road.  Whether you use a Land Rover for pleasure or work I’m sure it never lets you down.

However there is one big drawback if you own a Land Rover in Ireland and that is finding parts.  In fact finding the correct Land Rover Part is extremely difficult and when it comes to buying the prices are sky high in Ireland!

If you’ve had a problem finding Land Rover Parts let me know or if you feel, as I do, that Land Rover Parts pricing is high in Ireland let me know too.
